The Global Brands Database of WIPO will get an additional 3 million UK trademarks.

UK Intellectual Property Office joins WIPOS global brands database

This comes after a cooperation agreement was signed at the General Assemblies in Geneva by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

The WIPO provides the Global Brands Database as a free internet resource. More than 50 million records from 71 national and international collections are accessible on one website.

The tool is designed to be effective and simple to use. When registering a trademark, companies can use it anywhere in the world to see if the mark—or one that is similar—is already in use. Before submitting a trademark application, those who are interested in registering a trademark can search the Global Brands Database or simply browse already-registered marks in markets that they may be interested in.

The UK will initially add about 3 million records, beginning with already registered trademarks. Since these trademarks have been added to the global database, anyone conducting a database search anywhere in the world will be able to find UK-registered trademarks. They are therefore less likely to be unintentionally violated.

Tim Moss, The IPO”s Chief Executive stated: “We are pleased to be working with WIPO to support great British brands, and benefit IP users around the globe.” “The addition of more than 3 million the UK registered trademarks to WIPO’s database will help businesses grow their brands with confidence. Providing additional protection will reassure UK trademark holders that their mark is less likely to be infringed. Our partnership with WIPO in areas of common interest ensures that the IP framework remains fit for the future. The UK has one of the most highly regarded IP environments in the world, and joining the database is a practical step that will help keep it that way.” Director General of WIPO Daren Tang stated: “We are delighted with the inclusion of the UK trademarks collection in WIPO’s Global Brand Database. This is a significant step for users the world over and greatly enhances the value of the database, especially for companies seeking to file a new trademark application in multiple countries. The new agreement also paves the way for greater technical collaboration between our offices, including the use of machine learning to improve the efficiency of IP-related procedures.”
A brand, classification, country, company, or date search can be performed on the database. Additionally, you can upload an image for search purposes. Along with names, abbreviations, and symbols of international organizations, the database also contains details on appellations of origin, armorial bearings, flags, and other state emblems protected in various nations. Users have access to both national/regional and Madrid System trademark collections for their searches. The Madrid Monitor serves as the entrance to the Madrid System and updates users on their trademark.
