Firm's Overview

Founded by Sandra Cabanne and Alexandre Nappey, with their team (five associates and one paralegal) on 1 October 2017, SCAN Avocats AARPI (SCAN Avocats) is a specialist IP and IT law firm based in Paris. The firm has offices in Bordeaux and Strasbourg. A new office will open soon in Lyon. SCAN Avocats helps clients to protect their IP assets on a worldwide basis, thanks to its extensive network of correspondents.

The firm represents large and medium-sized domestic and foreign clients in a broad range of industries – including transportation, insurance and pensions, agro-food, luxury items and jewellery, media, real estate and retail as well as innovative start-ups – before the EUIPO, national trademark offices and civil and criminal courts.

SCAN Avocats’ lawyers are well-known for the legal advice and representation on:

  • IP law;
  • prosecution and litigation (including trademarks, designs and models, domain names, authors’ rights, copyright and anti-counterfeiting);
  • IT and digital law; and
  • data privacy law

The team offers a modern approach to these areas of law and understands the client’s needs. They are quick to respond, thanks to a combination of readily available technical knowledge and pragmatism.

The partners also run IP and IT law sessions with training institutes and universities (notably the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies, the European Institute for Enterprise and Intellectual Property, the Bar school and Strasbourg University) and are coaches on the National Industrial Property Institute Master Class programme.

SCAN Avocats develops strategies and creative solutions. These enable the firm to provide bespoke legal advice to its clients, enabling them to rise to their business challenges. The team uses state-of-the-art technology to work efficiently with clients. This technology includes collaboration tools, budget monitoring, an IP rights’ database and reporting.

Both founding partners have recognised expertise in litigation and the prosecution of traditional intellectual property as well as new technologies, including domain names, software, data privacy and e-reputation. Contracts, unfair competition law, distribution and comparative advertising are also key features of their practice.

Ms Cabanne began her legal career in 2002 as a criminal law attorney. In order to broaden her experience of practical business, she joined the French national railways (SNCF) legal department and was made head of the IP department of the SNCF Voyages division. In 2009 Ms Cabanne decided to move back to a law firm as an IP senior associate and in 2011 she joined an IP and IT boutique firm in Paris, where she became partner in March 2013.

She has been recognised by Décideurs Leader’s League since 2013, by the Legal 500 since 2013 and by the WTR 1000 since 2016. The WTR 1000 2017 edition specified that: “Sandra Cabanne operates flawlessly on both sides of the contentious/non-contentious divide and brings valuable design and unfair competition law knowledge to the table”. In the 2018 edition, she was described as follows: “Sandra Cabanne at SCAN Avocats has the magic touch for portfolio building as well as extensive courtroom experience.” She is recognised in the fields of enforcement and litigation as well as in prosecution and strategy.

Mr Nappey began his career in 1999 as a European trademark attorney for a major IP law firm, where he created and developed the IT law department. He became a lawyer in 2012 when entering the largest law firm in Europe as a senior manager in intellectual property and information technology. He joined an IP and IT boutique law firm as a partner in August 2015.

Mr Nappey has been featured in the Legal 500 since 2015 and in the WTR 1000 since 2016, where he is described as follows: “Internet whiz Alexandre Nappey at SCAN Avocats dispenses deft domain name support to clients of all shapes and sizes”.
