Registration of industrial designs in Turkey – Every company that owns an industrial design and intends to expand its business in the Turkey market should use the Turkey intellectual property system. It is paramount for businesses to file an industrial design application in Turkey for industrial designs, even if the launch of the respective product on the market in Türkiye has not yet commenced.
Requirements for Industrial Design Registration Application in Turkey
An industrial design application in Türkiye requesting the right of priority must be filed within 6 months from the priority date.
The official language of the proceedings before the patent office is Turkish; however, the application can be submitted in another language if the translation is filed within three months after the filing date.
The following information and documents need to be provided in the application for registration of an industrial design in Türkiye:
- name, address, and nationality of the applicant, business address;
- request for design registration;
- representation of a design.
- payment of the Official Fees;
The submission of a Power of Attorney is not necessary for design registration in Turkey.
The Patent Office should receive a certified copy of the priority document and its Turkish translation within three months after the filing of the design application in Turkey.
There is no need for an Assignment Deed. If the applicant for a Turkish design application is not the original designer of the design, he must state in the application how he obtained permission to file for a patent from the creator.

In Türkiye, only formal examination is performed on design applications.
Validity period and renewal of industrial designs in Turkey
Designers who displayed products in which the design is incorporated or applied at national or international exhibitions in Turkey or official or officially recognized national or international exhibitions in States party to the Paris Convention may claim a right of priority for the registration of the design in Turkey if the application for priority is filed within six months of the first display of the products.
In Turkey, the term of design protection is five years from the filing date of the design application. It can be protected for a maximum of 25 years if the extension costs are paid in 5-year additions.
