Following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic for two years, Singapore IP Week 2022 is being held directly to meet the expectations of the global business community, innovators, and IP professionals.
In continuation of the 2021 IP Week theme “Ideas to Assets – Emerging Stronger with IP”, the theme of this year’s IP Week has been changed in the direction that is suitable for the new normal life: “Ideas to Assets – Chart our Future with IP,” with the implication that businesses need to know how to seize opportunities, consider making decisions, and know how to use IP as a lever of the economy led by intangible assets.
On September 6, Singapore’s Minister of Culture, Community & Youth and Second Minister of Law, Edward Tong, announced three new initiatives that will provide public startups, SMEs, and youth innovators with the resources they need to innovate and secure their IP, including patents and trademarks.
The first of these initiatives is IP Start, which is managed by the International Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). Singapore-based accelerators and incubators such as SGInnovate, the Singapore Deep Technology Alliance, and Imagine H2O Asia will provide workspaces, seed funding, mentors, resources, and training as part of the scheme. The goal is to assist startups in integrating IP management during the early stages of their business.
The forthcoming Business Secrets Guide to Trade Secrets is the main event to provide more information for startups, SMEs, and young innovators. This guide, created in collaboration with IPOS, the Entrepreneurial Action Community, Singapore International Business, the Singapore Business Federation, the Singapore Fintech Association, and SGTech, contains information on what trade secrets are and how they can be protected/managed, along with case studies, and trade secret lists of tools available to businesses.
The third initiative is the Singapore chapter of the Patent Assistance Program (IAP), a joint initiative of IPOS and the World Intellectual Property Organization. The IAP, with the assistance of volunteer patent attorneys from the Singapore Patent Attorneys Association, will assist youth in higher education institutions in effectively navigating the patent system, allowing them to focus on getting their idea to market. The IAP is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2022.
In his opening remarks at IP Week at Singapore 2022 held at Marina Bay Sands Convention & Exhibition Center on September 6, Tong said: “IP provides us with a powerful, versatile tool to support and even facilitate innovation. At its most basic, all IP regimes allow innovators to stake a claim on their innovations. But as an IP ecosystem develops and becomes more sophisticated, it allows innovators to do more with that claim, beyond simply using it to prevent others from copying their innovation. For instance, IP facilitates collaborative research and development, because it allows the collaborators to meaningfully control the fruits of their collaboration. IP can also be used as a strategic tool for businesses.”
“SMEs play a critical role in the Singapore economy, accounting for 99 percent of all companies and employing 70 percent of the local force. Startups are also important engines of innovation, generating new ideas, products and services. To reap the full benefits of their innovations, they need to have the expertise and know-how to secure their IP rights. These initiatives will provide innovators with the resources to help them gain a competitive edge,” Mr. Tong added.
