Firm's Overview

Guerra IP

Guerra IP History:

Established in 1969, in Porto Alegre, Guerra IP is a firm long respected for its commitment to protecting and defending clients’ ideas, innovations, and investments. One defining characteristic of the firm—instilled from the beginning and continuing to this very day—is the ability to foster the feeling that clients are not a number, but rather a personal and integral extension of the firm.  Building upon this foundation, the firm continues to reaffirm its dedication to meeting the evolving challenges of today’s IP clients. In one of many notable achievements, Partner Alberto Guerra was recently elected the Brazilian Delegate of ASIPI (Asociación Interamericana de la Propiedad Intelectual).   With this designation, he becomes the Brazilian representative for the largest Intellectual Property entity of Latin America, repeating the feat of his father and founder, Elias Marcos Guerra who joined the firm in 1971, (Brazilian Delegate for ASIPI from 1994 to 2001), and continuing the tradition of seeking to improve the regulatory system for protecting intellectual property in Brazil.  Also in the family tradition of excellence, Cristina Guerra, a highly educated and highly practiced lawyer, has been ranked by World Trademark Review as a leader in the Brazilian market with a Bronze designation. In more recent times, Guerra IP has significantly expanded—opening of a new office in Rio de Janeiro and adding new highly experienced partners.  This strategic and thoughtful expansion has enabled the firm to grow its global reach and offer top-level expertise in all areas of IP through its new team of professionals. While certain hallmark qualities, such as being highly responsive, proactive, personal, and strategic, have remain unchanged, the firm’s recent growth has enabled the realization of a new and expanded vision.  With the addition of these experienced and senior IP partners and their teams, Guerra IP has successfully developed into a truly international, full-service IP firm for both national and international clients alike.

Here's what the World Trademark Review said:
"Guerra IP just had a bumper year in prosecution, as several of its US clients ramped up their filing activities in Brazil. Using thorough and effective searching as a foundation, the team manages the filing and registration process and ongoing portfolio development with machine-like precision. That is not to say that its service lacks the personal touch; the squad overlay the more process-driven aspects of their work with strategic analyses tailored to each client". "Another draw is the specialist expertise of Cristina Guerra, who has a nuanced understanding of the law around geographical indications; she also has a deep knowledge of IP systems in the region and regularly plays the role of Latin America brand protection coordinator". "The IP transactional practice is in extremely capable hands as well, with Ricardo Pinho at the helm. Technically excellent and simply one of the best IP attorneys in Brazil,” he also contributes vitally to the rights management and contentious practices. The boutique has proved its mettle in litigation, its successes taking the form of the strong injunctions that have been coming thick and fast lately".

Here's what IAM magazine said:
From its base near Southern Brazil’s manufacturing heartland Porto Alegre, Guerra IP preaches patent doctrine to the country’s industrial community, guiding patrons along the rocky road to rights protection. It is adroit at utilising all available tools to promote national players’ stake in the market and deploys its business acumen and hands-on approach to assist the development of robust patent portfolios. Senior partner Alberto Guerra’s word is law; he drives the boutique’s growth through his passion for intellectual property and many years of experience counselling illustrious corporate bodies both domestically and abroad. Partner in the Rio de Janeiro office, Ricardo Pinho is a big name in the national IP scene – he recently completed a term as president of the Brazilian Association of Industrial Property Agents and is a sought-after authority in licensing matters.
